I included a deliberate safeguard during calibration: there should come a point where the sound returns to having no tonal difference from normal stereo, but also no 3D effect

I think this is the main point. It is easy to adjust the image during the various calibration steps so that it aligns with the position identified during the occlusion test, but it is harder to assess how closely it resembles the unprocessed signal. When using the bypass function, the unprocessed signal seems to have a different level than the processed one, making it difficult to evaluate the differences. For this reason, I am not at all certain that my calibration is optimal, so I am persisting in my attempt to resolve the issue I am experiencing. Do you have any suggestions for quickly switching between the unprocessed and processed signals during calibration to make evaluating the differences more effective?

I think this is exactly the core challenge. The lower level of the CTXMatrix signal is primarily due to the crosstalk cancellation (and any DSP processing in general) — if levels aren’t carefully adjusted, it can easily introduce clipping or other artifacts.

That’s why the bypass button exists: it was added during development to ensure the plugin doesn’t alter the original signal at all when bypassed, allowing for quick verification. However, it’s pretty much useless for proper A/B comparisons because of the significant level difference it creates.

For accurate evaluation during calibration, the best approach is to run everything in a DAW. Set up one track with the original stereo signal and another with CTXMatrix, then automate the mutes so that when you mute the CTXMatrix track, the stereo track becomes active (and vice versa). Although I have my reservations about why we are even comparing stereo sound to crosstalk-cancelled sound — XTC is trying to replicate how the music would sound if heard live, while stereo is a totally artificial sound that introduces its own signature. It’s more of an acquired taste. In the 60s, many didn’t like stereo over mono.

That said, even with precise level matching (even when measured with a microphone), final perception can still differ slightly due to how our ears/brain interpret the processed vs. unprocessed sound. So a bit of listening-based fine-tuning is usually necessary.

In the calibration instructions you kindly provided, you specify that at every step one should ensure the image is "sharp and natural" and, above all, "tonally faithful." This makes it useful to be able to compare the processed and unprocessed signals during the calibration process—specifically, at each step and for every parameter adjustment. I am therefore not entirely sure I have understood the procedure you are suggesting. Are you suggesting that for every step—and for every parameter adjustment within each step—I should record the processed track, adjust its level to match the previously recorded unprocessed track, and then perform a comparison? If I have understood correctly, that seems like a challenging and impractical approach. May I suggest—strictly for the calibration steps—lowering the level of the unprocessed signal when the bypass function is selected? This would allow to match the level of the processed signal, enabling a quick and effective comparison. After all, the attenuation level of the processed signal should be known based on the parameters currently set.
