Saluti, ST English version Hi Ligo, Thanks for the additional details. The thinning you’re hearing between roughly 250–500 Hz combined with the “boxed-in” quality is quite specific and helpful. I ran some tests using your reported calibration values. I sent both a 100–700 Hz sweep and white noise through CTXMatrix and checked the output in Audacity. The frequency response stayed quite flat in that range compared to the original signal. That said, I understand that what we measure and what we perceive can be different once crosstalk cancellation is applied. Regarding the theory: CTXMatrix applies full-band cancellation without frequency limiting. In my experience, introducing band-limiting or heavy EQ to “fix” certain regions often reduces the effectiveness of the 3D imaging. This is why I generally prefer keeping the cancellation full-range, though I do have an EQ version available for users who want to adjust specific areas. You mentioned a metallic or unnatural quality. This type of coloration is more commonly associated with the 2–5 kHz region. If that’s what you’re mainly hearing, it can often be reduced with a gentle EQ cut centred around 3–3.5 kHz. However, I usually find that adjusting the Centre control (without going past about 9 o’clock) gives a more natural result than adding EQ. To better understand what you’re experiencing, could you share the tracks (and specific sections) you used when evaluating the sound? If it helps, I can also use a well-known reference like Hotel California (Eagles) and post my findings here for comparison. I’ll continue testing based on your description and let you know if I find anything relevant. Thanks again for taking the time to describe the issue in detail. Thanks for your patience. I listened to various random tracks to make my assessments, always comparing different plugins, but I’d like to highlight "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" from Jacintha's album "Lush Life" and "Creuza de Ma'" from the self-titled album by Fabrizio De André (you might not know him, but I highly recommend giving it a listen—it's a beautiful record). Vocals are an excellent test for highlighting spectral variations. Keep in mind that my observations are based on subjective listening; I really ought to find the time to take actual measurements, but I don't have much time and I'm a bit lazy. Since I don't believe there is an inherent issue with your plugin—and because the alterations I hear don't seem linked solely to tonal shifts (I tried using EQ upstream during playback to correct, but the results weren't satisfactory)—I suspect either that my ears are misleading me during calibration (causing me to enter incorrect values) or that my setup isn't suited to the type of correction being applied. Finally, I should mention that for calibration, I used the pink noise tracks provided by Archimago, as I find it easier to localize the sound with those than with the tracks you provided. I hope to redo the calibration process soon, paying the utmost attention. STAmbio Inviato Sabato alle 13:53 Condividi Inviato Sabato alle 13:53 @Ligo Sorry Ligo after I prepared this draft I read your comment about uBACCH. I am unable to translate but please use Ai to translate this portion. uBACCH didn’t work with my setup also but when Choueiri went to Ralph Glasgal of Ambiophonics Institute to demo BACCH it also didn’t work in his main system ( both of are using Sound Lab ESL speaker) but BACCH worked in Ralph’s other system. It may be something specific in our system. there were instances when Ralph was developing the plugin some laptop of his students could not do the crosstalk cancellation properly despite everything was correct. He also noted some amplifier did not perform well with crosstalk. So the issue could be system specific and not your calibration. Unfortunately, he didn’t mention a specific amp brand but he did mention it was certain Dell laptop model which didn’t do well with XTC. He himself using Dell so only certain model was affected. Saluti, ST Hi Ligo, Thanks again for the detailed feedback. Your setup is actually quite valuable for me because you’re listening at a significantly greater distance (over 4 meters) with a 40° angle. This gives me useful insight into how CTXMatrix performs in larger rooms. There’s another user with a similarly large listening distance who also uses BaCCH4Mac. He found that CTXMatrix actually delivered more 3D imaging with no noticeable coloration in his system. So your experience is particularly interesting to me. Regarding room acoustics: as long as there are no strong early reflections arriving within roughly 1 millisecond, most proper crosstalk cancellation plugins should work reasonably well. This is because human sound localization mainly relies on interaural time differences (ITD), which are effective up to around 700 microseconds. Reflections arriving later than this are generally less disruptive to the imaging. From the values you shared, it looks like you followed the calibration steps quite carefully. That’s appreciated. If you decide to recalibrate, I would suggest starting with the attenuation set fully counter-clockwise (minimum, that is -12dB) and first trying to optimize the delay only. Once you find the best delay setting, then slowly increase the attenuation in small steps (around 2 dB at a time) while checking the sound. Always adjust delay before changing attenuation. I had a quick listen to both tracks you mentioned. I really like Jacintha’s version of “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” and I also enjoyed “Creuza de Ma’” — it has a very nice atmosphere. I’ll try listening to them properly on my main system tomorrow. Tonight I need to get some sleep though, as I want to wake up early for the France vs England match. Thank you once again for taking the time to share your experience in such detail. Feedback from users with larger systems like yours is very helpful for me. Saluti, ST Hi Ligo, Thanks for the update. When you describe it as “different flavours of the same dish,” it might be because the difference between normal stereo and well-executed crosstalk cancellation is actually quite fundamental. Proper XTC is not just another variation of stereo — it aims to deliver a binaural-like experience from ordinary stereo recordings when played through loudspeakers, with real depth, solidity, and imaging that can extend well beyond the speaker plane. Regarding the vocal on Jacintha’s track sounding further back: with proper level-matched comparison, it should sit in a similar position and with similar strength as normal stereo. The bypass button doesn’t match levels, so doing an A/B in a DAW is indeed more reliable. I’ll also test CTXMatrix with speakers positioned at 40° (my current setup is at 20°) so I can better relate to what you’re hearing. For reference, I previously posted detailed measurements on Audio Science Review using my SoundLab speakers at 20°, where the frequency response with CTXMatrix stayed quite close to plain stereo. You can see the thread here if you’re interested: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/crosstalk-cancellation-xtc-attenuation-and-colouration-measurements-–-ctxmatrix.71575/ One quick question about the occlusion test: when you block one ear, does the image shift noticeably, and does the tonal balance with one ear blocked feel similar to what you get with CTXMatrix active? Regarding measurements: conventional single-microphone measurements at the listening position are often not very conclusive for crosstalk cancellation, because the microphone sums everything while our ears and brain perceive the result after cancellation. If you have (or can borrow) in-ear binaural microphones, recording while wearing them yourself would give much more relevant data, as it captures the sound reaching your ears with your own HRTF. This would be more useful than regular measurements for understanding your specific experience. I’m happy to help interpret the results or continue troubleshooting once you have the data. Looking forward to seeing what you find. Hi ST, I am familiar with the effects of crosstalk cancellation, as I achieve good results with other plugins—within the limits of my system. It will never be perfect cancellation, but the increased focus, better layering of the soundstage and improved solidity are present to varying degrees depending on the plugin and configuration used. Something similar to what i hear with XTC happens with other plugins when I overdo the correction, but I tried lowering the XTC parameters during calibration, and the result was background hiss accompanying colorations similar to those I described earlier. Regarding the Jacintha track, the issue isn't that the vocal sound recessed—I could easily fix that by adjusting the "center" setting to bring it back to the right position—but rather that the timbre is unnatural and the instruments too don't sound natural; the overall soundstage feels unnatural, as if "cramped" inside a box. There is indeed an increase in focus and solidity, but at the expense of the aspects I mentioned. What measurements would you suggest? I was thinking of capturing a sweep at the listening position with both channels active to compare the results with and without XTC enabled, though perhaps, since I have an AD/DA interface, I could try other types of measurements as well. Saluti, ST Hi Ligo, Thanks for the additional details. You mentioned that other XTC plugins worked in your setup. This makes me think CTXMatrix should at least be able to reach a usable setting if the calibration is done correctly. When I designed CTXMatrix, I included a deliberate safeguard during calibration: there should come a point where the sound returns to having no tonal difference from normal stereo, but also no 3D effect. When users reach this stage, it usually confirms that the delay and attenuation changes are effected. And if it didn’t trigger the safeguard then the problem is elsewhere and no longer a calibration issue but incompatibility. This can be due to the fact that CTXMatrix works in real time at your system’s sampling rate, so even if the value shows 32 samples, it doesn’t necessarily mean 320 μs. In fact, I cannot determine the exact timing because it depends on the actual delays coming out of the speakers. For reference, I once had an audio professional with Harbeth speakers who couldn’t get Miller & Horowitz AmbiophonicsDSP working properly in his own studio, even though the settings looked correct. At that time I was using AmbiophonicsDSP and also Harbeth speakers. This was even before the idea for CTXMatrix was conceived. So despite all the explanation, he decided to drop by and check it out himself. When he tried the same settings at my place, it worked immediately. He said something like “I cannot get this sound” and was puzzled. If after trying everything it still doesn’t work properly for you, it may simply be that CTXMatrix is not compatible with your current system or setup. In that case, I would suggest trying it on another system if possible, just to confirm. Also, can you confirm which JRiver MC version you are using? I tested CTXMatrix thoroughly with MC32 and I am still using MC32 64-bit on my main system. I’m not sure if newer updates might be causing compatibility problems. For highly reverberant church recordings like those, crosstalk cancellation (XTC) combined with DCH really shines — it can transport you right into the venue with its 2-second reverb. Here’s a quick sample from my system showing the difference between XTC and XTC + DCH: YouTube link as above Like usual, use headphones to best sense the envelopment feeling and turn off any special effect DSP including spatial sound. Cheers!
